An old African proverb says

The saying and its attribution as an African proverb were in circulation way before it became popular and appeared as covers of books. It originated from the Nigerian Igbo culture and proverb "Ora na azu nwa" which means "it takes the community (or village) to raise a child". The Igbos also name their children "Nwa ora" which means "child of the community".

The idea that it takes an entire community (or village) to raise a child is not new. Long in existence, studies have found that a concerted cooperative effort between the family, education system (if your child is not home schooled) and a community of supporters. There are, however, problems that stifle black literacy.
